Plot summary
Dead dogs keep turning up in North Port, a small island town, and the bindings on the library's books lie ruined. Richard Tarbell, the sheriff, finds cockroaches in his own house one morning. Elizabeth Johnson, the mayor's daughter, returns after four years away for her father Elias's birthday. Dr. Morgan Hubbard arrives to look into the dog deaths and sets a trap baited with a live cat, which the insects attack. Homer Birum, the pest control man, tries to clear cockroaches from the diner owned by Richard's girlfriend Lillian. Richard shows Homer objects he took from a dog carcass, and Homer identifies them as cockroach droppings.

- The Nest's filmmakers used 2,000 flying cockroaches, shot at Quicksilver Studios in Venice, Los Angeles. When some escaped into nearby dressing rooms, the American Humane Association could not help, as it must be contacted before shooting anything involving insects.
- Both the pickup truck explosion and the exterminator's house explosion in The Nest are footage taken from Humanoids from the Deep, the 1980 science fiction film starring Doug McClure and Vic Morrow.
- Lead actress Lisa Langlois objected to The Nest's poster, which showed a woman in underwear being ravaged by a giant cockroach, noting her character appears in no such scene. She said it made her look seduced by a giant cockroach and that she felt exploited.
