Plot summary
A university student is writing a thesis on the German-speaking villages of central Texas. Driving toward Luckenbach, he runs out of gas and walks into town, where Kirska Schöennig takes him to the hotel her grandfather Hans runs. The older residents refuse to discuss the Luckenbach Witch, but Kirska lends him a book about her, and he learns that the woman was buried near the inn. A century earlier, the married Schöennig man who had been her lover denounced her as a witch. The student opens her shallow grave by hand and removes the spike driven through her remains. She rises from the grave naked, intent on revenge against the Schöennigs, the family of the man who denounced her.
