Plot summary
Art Bechstein is a recent college graduate spending the summer in 1980s Pittsburgh. His father, Joe Bechstein, runs the city's mob, steering his son's life and judging his choices. At the beginning of June, Art counts this as his last summer before he goes to work as a stock broker. At a party he meets Jane Bellwether, who is smart, blond and lovely, and who already has a boyfriend. The next day Cleveland Arning, Jane's boyfriend, takes Art away from work and the summer's adventures start. Cleveland lives near the edge, explosive, with hints of trouble involving local thugs.

- An earlier film of Michael Chabon's novel died on the vine. In 2000 the independent filmmaker Jon Sherman adapted it hoping to shoot with Jason Schwartzman as Art Bechstein; by that August Chabon announced the project had fallen apart, writing, "Ah, well. Maybe someday."
- Rawson Marshall Thurber won Chabon over and then cut a main character out of the book: he removed the gay Arthur Lecomte "whole cloth", calling it the most glaring change, because he believed the film needed a love triangle as its engine.
