Plot summary
Iiris lives with her mother and stepfather in Finland. Her wages from a match factory production line go to them, and she does the housework while they watch television. She goes to dances but attracts no partners, so she buys a brightly colored dress. Her parents call her a whore and tell her to return it, and she refuses and wears the dress to a dance club. There she meets Aarne, who takes her for a prostitute because of the dress. They spend the night at his apartment, and he leaves the next morning before she wakes, with money on the bedside table.
