Plot summary
Bud is the quiet child of a Liverpool family in the mid-1950s, and his days take their shape from home, from church and from a school where he struggles and where bullies wait. The cinema is his refuge: he goes to the movie house as often as he can, and songs of the period and lines from the films stay with him after he leaves. At home his mother's affection and the company of his brothers and sisters are steady comforts, while the music he hears and the movie dialogue he remembers fill out the narrow world he lives in.
