Plot summary
After a stay in a psych ward following his mother Dolly's death, teenager Oliver Martin returns to his house in the town of Hubris, where social workers Margot Seale and Julius Carter check on him. Margot encourages him to make friends and stop being alone, while Julius considers him maladjusted and a lost cause. Oliver meets Chloe, a girl whose family has just moved to town. He visits his mother's unmarked grave and tells her about his life. At the graveyard he overhears the funeral of Mitch, a boy struck down by a tire from a plane crash, and tells the social workers that Mitch does not live far away. He digs Mitch's body up and brings it home, and by morning Mitch is moving around the house.
