Plot summary
In 1917 Palestine, British and Commonwealth forces are stalled before Turkish and German lines. Four Australian cavalrymen, Frank, Scotty, Chiller, and Tas, serve in the 4th Light Horse Brigade. When Frank is killed, Dave Mitchell replaces him, but he cannot bring himself to shoot in battle and is moved to the medical corps. British commanders plan to capture Beersheba. Major Richard Meinertzhagen leaves behind papers suggesting the attack will be only a diversion. The Australians head toward Beersheba with limited water and supplies. German advisor Reichert believes the move is a feint and advises against sending reinforcements. With time and water running short, British commanders agree to send in the Australian Light Horse, expecting a suicide mission. Dave and the medical detachment are ordered to follow behind the Light Horse.

- After the final day of filming had wrapped on 1 December 1986, actor Jon Blake was injured in a car accident near Nectar Brook, South Australia. He was left with permanent paralysis and brain damage.
- Simon Wincer claimed that he, Ginnane and Ian Jones had to put in their own money at some stage when the film looked like falling over.
- Several pieces of footage from the film's climactic scenes were re-used in "Palestine, October 1917", a 1993 episode of The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles that also dealt with the Battle of Beersheba and was also directed by Simon Wincer.
- Although the story is set in Palestine and Egypt, the film was shot entirely on location in Victoria and in Hawker, South Australia.
