Plot summary
Richard works at a prison as a corrections officer. A promotion makes him Director of Prisoner Communications, which puts him in the letter room, where every letter the inmates send or receive is read and checked for contraband. He learns the work quickly. His life is a lonely one. Among the mail that passes through the room are the letters of a man on death row, and Richard becomes more involved in that inmate's private affairs than the job calls for.
