Plot summary
Augusta and her sister Louise live on an isolated Southern farm with Mad, a slave, in the closing days of the American Civil War. Left without men, the three must defend the house. When Louise is bitten by a raccoon, Augusta goes in search of medicine for her. At a neighbor's house she comes upon the neighbor's body and a bottle of poison. A barman tells her to leave when she reaches a bar. There she encounters Moses and Henry, two renegade Union soldiers who have left the approaching army. Augusta returns to the farmhouse she shares with Louise and Mad.
