Plot summary
Pukapuka is a remote atoll in the Cook Islands, and it is where Amelia Hokulea Borofsky and Johnny Frisbie each lived as children. Amelia's father, the anthropologist Robert Borofsky, was on Pukapuka in the mid 1970s. Johnny wrote her book Miss Ulysses of Puka-Puka at fifteen, and it was the earliest literary work by a Pacific Islander to appear in print. The two women left the atoll at different times. Decades later, both travel back, wanting to reconnect with the place where they grew up. The return is a time of celebration and of belonging for them, and the atoll has changed since they left.
