Plot summary
Catherine meets Nick Girard at a gallery, and after a mugger attacks her outside, he takes her in while her ankle heals. They fall in love and marry, and she moves into his apartment. Nick, a widower and film composer, refuses to discuss Stella, the wife he lost. From Badge, an art broker who lives in the loft below, and from Charlie and Daisy, Catherine learns that an intruder killed Stella after a struggle and that Stella's unstable mind had made the marriage difficult. Catherine comes to believe someone enters the apartment and damages her belongings, yet the evidence vanishes before she can show Nick, who begins to wonder whether she is suffering the same delusions that troubled Stella.
