Robert Drivas
Biography
Robert Drivas was an American actor and theater director who was born in Chicago and trained at the University of Chicago, the University of Miami, and the Greek Playhouse in Athens. He began on stage in Florida and Chicago productions, and Tennessee Williams cast him as the lead in Sweet Bird of Youth in 1956. He made his Broadway debut in 1958 in The Firstborn and won a Theatre World Award in 1963 for Mrs. Dally Has a Lover. He appeared on television from 1957 in dramas such as Route 66, The Fugitive, and Hawaii Five-O. His films included Cool Hand Luke (1967), The Illustrated Man (1969), and Where It's At (1969). He also directed for the stage, winning an Obie Award for Bad Habits and directing The Ritz in 1975. He died in 1986.

Big break
Tennessee Williams saw Drivas act in Tea and Sympathy and then invited him to play the lead in Sweet Bird of Youth. That play had its premiere at George Keathley's Studio M Playhouse in Coconut Grove in 1956.
First role
Drivas's first film appearance was as Loudmouth Steve in Cool Hand Luke in 1967, a debut that led to more film work.
Behind the camera
Drivas directed Terrence McNally's play The Ritz in 1975. He also directed Bad Habits, a production that earned him an Obie Award.
