Plot summary
Emily Crane works as a picture editor at Life magazine until a 1951 House Un-American Activities Committee summons her to name colleagues; she refuses and loses the job. She takes part-time work as a companion and reader to an elderly woman, and from that house she hears an argument in the neighboring one, conducted mostly in German. Through the window she sees Ray Salwen, the committee's prosecutor, and a young man named Stefan interpreting for an older German speaker. Emily asks Stefan what the meeting was about, and when he puts her off she keeps pressing. The FBI agent first assigned to watch her becomes the person she turns to as she starts looking into the house on Carroll Street.
