Biography

Paul Sparer was an American character actor born in Boston in 1923. He attended Harvard University, where he graduated cum laude. On Broadway he performed in a long list of plays, among them Love's Labour's Lost, The Merchant of Venice, Saint Joan, Much Ado About Nothing, The Price, and Shadowlands. On television he played Rex Cooper on Somerset and Another World, two soap operas, and he became familiar as the narrator of the anthology series Tales from the Darkside. His film credits included Loving (1970) and The House on Carroll Street (1988). He also made guest appearances on series such as Kojak, Lou Grant, and Spenser: For Hire, and he appeared on Armstrong Circle Theatre and The Adams Chronicles. He had a part in the first Law & Order episode, Prescription for Death, and he narrated an unabridged recording of Kahlil Gibran's The Prophet, which came out in 1985 and was issued again in 2006.
