Plot summary
Lucius Clark, the tenant of Blackmoor Castle and a man about to be ennobled, has hidden stolen rough diamonds somewhere on the property. A masked assailant begins murdering people around the castle, branding the letter M into a victim's forehead and then cutting off the head, and demands that Clark recognize the killer's claim to the stones. Clark's first thought is that the phantom must be the castle's actual owner, the impoverished Lord Blackmoor, and before long other suspects come to light.
