Plot summary
Ernie Parsons, a gunfighter, escapes a hanging for killing a disreputable man after a woman's untrue testimony saves him. On the trail he finds a murdered minister, and a search of the body turns up a letter from a town that has invited the dead man, sight unseen, to serve as its preacher. Ernie takes the dead man's clothes and belongings to throw off his pursuers and decides to take his place. The town welcomes him, and his first duty is the funeral of Sam Underwood, killed on the orders of the town boss, Mr. Ross. Attracted to Sally Underwood, Ernie stays on, and when Ross sends men to remove him, he answers with his gunfighting skills.
