Plot summary
Stretching roughly 4,000 miles and spanning some 1,800 years, China's Great Wall stands as a civil engineering achievement on a scale that is hard to put into words. A National Geographic photographer sets out to cover its whole length in a single year, from one end to the other. His journey records the terrain the Wall crosses, the communities that live alongside it, and even the spaces inside the structure. The project grows out of an earlier book of his photographs and an earlier series of journeys along the Silk Road. It also returns to a long-running question about Marco Polo, who spent 24 years in China yet never wrote about the Wall, and asks why the Wall's ambition may remain unmatched.
