Plot summary
A vixen slips into a chicken coop to feed her cubs and keeps raiding it until a farmer shoots her. The farmer attacks the cubs, and one survives. Anders, ten, and his six-year-old brother Kjell find an otter caught in a burrow and pull it free. They cage the animal in secret and tame it, keeping it hidden from their family, and they feed it on fish they catch through the ice of a frozen lake. Anders tells the story as a grown man.
