Plot summary

On a bookshelf filled with vacation souvenirs, Knick is a snowman who lives inside a glass globe marked Nome Sweet Nome, Alaska, with an igloo backdrop and snow. The knick-knacks around him come from warmer places, and one of them, a Sunny Miami souvenir, shows a tanned blonde on a pool lounger in a blue bikini and sunglasses. Knick longs to reach her, but the dome around him will not open. He hurls himself at the pane behind his igloo backdrop, chisels with his carrot nose and a hammer, and turns a jackhammer on the glass until his facial features fall off.

Did you know?!Facts and trivia about Knick Knack (1989)

Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.

  • Singer Bobby McFerrin improvised the film's a cappella vocal jazz soundtrack while watching a rough cut, and when the placeholder credits reading "blah-blah-blah-blah" came up he sang those words, which stayed in the finished score. He did the score for free because he thought the film was cool to be involved with.
  • When the short was re-released in 2003 with Finding Nemo, Pixar re-rendered it so the woman on the "Miami" knick-knack and the mermaid in the fishbowl had much smaller breasts, the mermaid gaining a seashell bra. John Lasseter called the change the studio's "own choice" and "just crossing the line for me personally as a father."
  • After Tin Toy won the Oscar, Disney began a campaign to win John Lasseter back and offered him a directorial position. He turned it down, telling Pixar co-founder Ed Catmull, "I can go to Disney and be a director, or I can stay here and make history."
  • Director John Lasseter and his wife collected snow globes and enjoyed souvenirs from distant places, and those elements made their way into the short.
  • After Knick Knack, Pixar took a break from animated shorts and switched to television commercials to build income and hire new animators.
