Plot summary
During the Second Sudanese Civil War, the village of Mamere, Paul, Jeremiah and Abital is destroyed and their family is killed. The children walk for months through the wilderness, join a column of refugees, and reach Kakuma, a camp in Kenya, where they live for thirteen years. A resettlement program selects them for America. In New York, Abital is told she will go to Boston to live with a family, since only one of the brothers is a blood relative, and the three young men fly on to Kansas City. There an employment counselor, Carrie Davis, is assigned to help them find work, and Pamela arranges their house. The brothers take their first jobs while they try to locate their sister.

- In 2015 the Foundation for Lost Boys and Girls of Sudan sued screenwriter Margaret Nagle and producers Alcon Entertainment and Imagine Entertainment on behalf of 54 Sudanese refugees, arguing the refugees were joint authors of their own life stories after Nagle recorded and used their interviews to write the film.
- The court eventually agreed the refugees' interview statements supported a copyright-infringement claim and issued a permanent injunction against the film, though the case was settled out of court before that ruling was finalized.
