Plot summary
James Wilks, who fights as a mixed martial artist, also teaches self defense. Sidelined by an injury, he uses the time to look into what plant-based eating does for health, recovery and athletic performance. He begins with the vegetarian diet of Roman gladiators and then speaks with athletes including Scott Jurek, Patrik Baboumian, Bryant Jennings and Derrick Morgan, who credit their results to plant-based eating. Scott Stoll, a USA Olympic team physician, argues that animal protein hinders recovery through inflammatory molecules, while plant proteins are said to support gut microbial diversity and lower inflammation. Walter Willett, a professor of epidemiology and nutrition, argues that evidence links heavy dairy protein consumption to a higher risk of prostate cancer. Public health official Perry Mason describes meat and dairy industry tactics borrowed from the tobacco industry playbook.
