Plot summary
During the gold rushes of the 1890s, cameleers bring camel trains into the Western Australian outback. Hanif is a young cameleer there, and he and Jundah, another cameleer, befriend Woorak, an Aboriginal hunter. Hanif comes upon Mal, the only survivor of a massacre, and by chance acquires two gold bars that had been stolen. Melting those bars down calls for an illegal furnace, so Hanif sets out across arid country with Mal; the two have to compromise to survive, while Gold Squad officers hunt them.
