Plot summary
The flying guillotine is not a handheld blade. It is thrown, not held. From a long way off it can take a man's head. The Emperor's armies built the weapon, and Emperor Yung Cheng's guard is trained to use it. The Emperor is suspicious of those around him, and anyone he fears may be a threat becomes a target; the guillotine is carried out on his word. Ma Teng serves in that guard and is drilled in the weapon's handling. The missions he is handed disturb him, and he questions the morality of the work, troubled by his master's excesses.
