Plot summary
A year of preparation goes into China: Through The Looking Glass, an exhibition at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York of Chinese-inspired Western fashion. Andrew Bolton, the Costume Institute's chief curator, chooses 150 garments from 40 designers, and conceptualizes and designs the Met Gala with Anna Wintour, the Institute's annual multimillion-dollar fundraiser. The film follows Wintour's daily life too and asks whether fashion is art. Most of the designs come from American and European designers who describe their inspiration as a fantasy of China. Journalists and the exhibition's mostly Chinese collaborators challenge Bolton and Wintour over orientalism and stereotyping.
