Plot summary
In 1996, David Lipsky, a writer whose own novel met with modest success, reads David Foster Wallace's Infinite Jest and is awed by it. He talks his editor at Rolling Stone into letting him write a profile of Wallace for the magazine, and the assignment sends him to the author's home near Bloomington-Normal, Illinois, where Wallace teaches writing. Wallace agrees to be taped, on the condition that anything he asks to keep off the record stays out of the article. The two talk about fame, television, loneliness and writing as they drive to a class he teaches, a diner and a convenience store, then fly to Minneapolis for the last stop on Wallace's book tour, where Lipsky meets Wallace's friends Julie and Betsy.
