Plot summary
Six girls are born on the sixth day of the sixth month in an Amish community whose prophecy says one of them will become the Devil's Hand at eighteen. The girls are accused of being Satan's children, to be cleansed before they turn eighteen. Elder Eli Beacon wants the infants killed, and Jacob, whose daughter Mary is among them, blocks him; one mother kills her baby and then herself. The surviving girls grow up with little knowledge of the prophecy, with Beacon and much of the community keeping watch over them. Mary, who has epilepsy, begins having terrifying visions. Then a mysterious figure starts to murder the girls.
