Plot summary
Sylvia Walton of Harlem inherits a banana plantation in Jamaica and travels there to manage it. Her half-sister Isabelle, disinherited and left without the estate she ran until their father died, does not come out to greet her and wants the plantation for herself. Isabelle also envies the affection John Lowden holds for Sylvia. Sylvia has two rival suitors, and she is not the only one troubled by the drums that sound constantly and grow louder across the island. Percy Jackson, her servant, falls for Elvira, an island girl who warns him that his soul is in danger. The story opens with a song and a cockfight.
