Plot summary
John Hinckley Jr. shoots President Ronald Reagan, and the wounded president is taken to a hospital in critical condition. Two young surgeons work to keep him alive. Beyond the operating room, the men and women around the presidency see more than one man's life at stake: Soviet forces stand ready to move into Poland, and the threat of nuclear war hangs over the hours that follow, so the government needs someone to take control. Nancy Reagan, Alexander Haig, James Baker, Cap Weinberger and Ed Meese are among those drawn into the contest for authority, while a divided cabinet and staff have little hold on events and face a deluge of press coverage.
