Plot summary
After his mother's death leaves him in control of the Frankenstein estate at fifteen, Victor takes on the scientist Paul Krempe as his tutor, and after two years of study the two begin experimenting together. They revive a dead puppy. Victor proposes creating a perfect human from body parts, and Paul helps at first, then withdraws, unwilling to keep collecting human remains. Victor's cousin Elizabeth, now grown and engaged to him, comes to live at the house. Victor takes a robber's corpse from a gibbet and buys hands and eyes from charnel house workers, and he means the creature to have the brain of the aging professor Bernstein, so that it will have a sharp mind.

- Christopher Lee's casting as the creature resulted largely from his height of 6 feet 5 inches, though Hammer had earlier considered the even taller Bernard Bresslaw, at 6 feet 7 inches, for the role.
- Hammer refrained from duplicating aspects of Universal's 1931 film, so make-up artist Phil Leakey had to design a new look for the creature bearing no resemblance to the Boris Karloff original created by Jack Pierce.
- Screenwriter Jimmy Sangster, who adapted Mary Shelley's novel Frankenstein for Hammer, had worked as a production manager and kept the budget in mind, leaving out the villagers-storming-the-castle scenes typical of the Universal horror films “because we couldn't afford it”.
