Plot summary
A meteorite crashes onto the Crane family farm in Tellico Plains, Tennessee during a storm, and by morning it is a sphere with a hard shell that oozes a noxious liquid. Alan Forbes, a doctor living nearby, examines it and wants to alert the authorities. Charlie Davidson, a realtor who heads the chamber of commerce, argues against it, hoping the Tennessee Valley Authority will still choose the town for a new reservoir, and Esther, Forbes' wife, pushes her husband to keep quiet as well. The object dissolves into a gelatinous liquid that soaks into the soil. Then the well water turns cloudy and tastes bad, the fruit and vegetables grow large but are rotten inside, and the livestock turn violent.
