Plot summary

September 1944, in the final days of the Continuation War. Veikko, a Finnish sniper his compatriots took for a would-be deserter, is chained to a rock in a remote Lapland forest and dressed in a German Waffen-SS uniform. Ivan, a Red Army captain accused of anti-Soviet correspondence, is arrested and sent to a court martial; Soviet planes bomb the vehicle carrying him. Anni, a Sámi reindeer farmer whose husband and herd were taken by German troops four years earlier, finds the wreck and carries the badly hurt Ivan to her hut. Veikko, freed at last but still in his shackles, reaches the same farm. The three have no language in common.
