Plot summary
Every year, lesser flamingos gather in enormous numbers at Lake Natron in northern Tanzania, and the species also collects in the salt lakes of the region. More than eighty percent of the lesser flamingos found in the wild were born at this one lake. The birds mate on an immense island of salt, then raise their chicks on the isolated shores in an extreme and dangerous environment. Marabou storks prey on eggs and on newly born chicks, and a spotted hyena gives the adult flamingos no mercy. Among the chicks, one female takes center stage as she picks up the habits of her species.

- Imogen Heap was originally set to compose and perform the score and traveled to Tanzania with Ward, Aeberhard and the crew during the 2006-2007 shoot. Clashing with the film's delayed release and her new album, the job passed to The Cinematic Orchestra.
- The score's cues "Arrival of the Birds" and "Transformation" were used in the last scene of The Theory of Everything and in the short film Together Apart from the Cornetto Cupidity Series, and in December 2012 "Arrival of the Birds" featured in a Giorgio Armani perfume commercial.
- The Crimson Wing was the first new production revealed by Disney's Disneynature studio after its April 2008 launch, but the US domestic release of Earth on Earth Day 2009 came first, making The Crimson Wing the label's second film.
