Plot summary
Harry Fertig's young son Stevie dies after negligent care at a hospital, and that death drives Harry to kill the doctor, the nurse and the clerk he holds responsible. Roy Bleakie, a New York defense lawyer who cares about winning cases rather than the matters inside them, is asked by Harry's employer to take the defense. Harry wants to plead guilty, which shocks the lawyer hired to save him, and Bleakie is left defending a man he views as honorable. The case sets Bleakie's appetite for success against his client's wish for the truth, and it makes him question his own morals.
