Plot summary
Brown returns to Port-au-Prince from New York, where he tried in vain to sell the hotel his mother left him. On the voyage he has picked up guests: Major Jones, an Englishman, and Mr. and Mrs. Smith, an American couple. Jones wants to sell arms to the government of François "Papa Doc" Duvalier, and the Smiths want to promote vegetarianism, but the contacts of both parties have lost favor with the regime. Brown is also involved with Martha Pineda, whose husband serves as South American ambassador to Haiti. He tries to help his guests, and brings the Smiths together with a new minister, who takes note when he learns the size of the investment they have in mind.

- Political conditions in Haiti made shooting the Haiti-set story there impossible, so Peter Glenville's production filmed in Dahomey, now Benin, with further shooting on the Côte d'Azur in France.
- The Comedians turned out to be the last film Peter Glenville directed; three years earlier he had directed Richard Burton in an award-winning production of Becket.
