Plot summary
Five years on, Laura Hollis builds a career in journalism in Toronto while Carmilla Karnstein adjusts to mortality. Carmilla takes a fondness for bloody treats and bites by accident, and Laura has strange dreams. Perry and S. Lafontaine look Carmilla over and find that her humanity, known as the Spark, is fading. Believing the dreams and the fading are connected, Laura and Carmilla travel with Perry, Lafontaine, Melanippe Callis and Wilson Kirsch to a mansion in Austria. Ghosts of girls sacrificed in Carmilla's mother's rituals greet them there and describe the Ash Moon Ritual, which can free them to move on if Carmilla gives up her mortal life.
