Plot summary

Buck, part Saint Bernard and part Scotch collie, lives at ease on the Santa Clara, California estate of Judge Miller until the Klondike Gold Rush of 1897 makes sled dogs valuable in the far north. Judge Miller's gardener, Manuel, steals Buck and sells him. The buyer ships the dog to Seattle, where a man in a red sweater clubs the strong-willed animal until it submits. Perrault, who carries dispatches for the Canadian government, then buys Buck and takes him by boat to Dyea, Alaska, with the dog musher Francois. Harnessed into a sled team, Buck learns to pull on the trail and meets Spitz, the experienced lead dog, with whom he contends for mastery of the pack.
