- Cthulhu was played by a puppet whose skeleton had almost one hundred points of articulation, not counting its wire tentacles; its head, hands and wings were latex and its eyes were two battery powered light bulbs.
- The Call of Cthulhu was the first film adaptation of H. P. Lovecraft's famous story, and it used Mythoscope, a blend of vintage and modern filming techniques meant to look like a 1920s-era film.
- The swamp seen in the film was a miniature set built at a 1/24th scale, and it took six weeks to build.
- For the first fourteen months of shooting, producer Sean Branney kept an online journal of the production, noting how miserably hot the summer shoot was and how the camera was put in the ocean for action shots.
