Plot summary
A documentary examines what masculinity means among gay men, how it is expected of them and how they define it. Interviews with a wide range of gay men, mixed with archival footage that moves from the 1970s onward, survey the communities often labeled butch: bears and leather men, muscle men, rodeo riders, cops, athletes and construction workers. Writers, teachers, historians and psychologists offer their views on gay culture, while the men speak about homophobia, stereotyping, metrosexuality, effeminacy, fashion and body image. Several masculine gay men describe feeling alone as they try to fit into general gay life. Filming took place in Atlanta, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Guerneville and Seattle.
