Plot summary
Colchester, Illinois, has 1,493 residents and a law that still forbids the sale of alcohol. Henry "Kelly" Wagle, the gangster the town made into a folk hero, died in 1929 and remains a subject of argument there. He is the central figure in two murder cases that were never solved. Accounts of his life credit him with good deeds and slick driving, and they also describe a violent temper and secrets he kept. A 1998 nonfiction book about him was nominated for a Pulitzer Prize and a National Book Award in nonfiction. Told without a narrator and without reenactments, with one piece of period music.
