Plot summary

A documentary examines the trade in old and rare books and the shops that sell them, chiefly in New York City. Among those it follows are the three sisters who run the Argosy Book Store, the owner of the Strand Bookstore, and the founder of James Cummins Bookseller. It visits the Park Avenue Armory, where dealers gather each year and early editions fetch hundreds of thousands of dollars, and the crowded apartments of collectors. Dealers, collectors, and writers talk about the feel of a book, the wonder of the object, and the importance of what is inside. The film moves between the past and present of a calling that keeps the printed word alive.
