Plot summary
A 99-year sentence for her husband's death brings Collier to a remote prison in the Philippines. She meets the women who share her cell, among them Grear, Bodine and Ferina, and they warn her about Lucian, the guard who tortures inmates. Bodine is punished for hiding contraband from Raphael, her revolutionary boyfriend. Harrad, Grear's girlfriend, is in severe withdrawal from heroin, and Grear does what she can for her. With two men who bring food into the prison, Harry and Fred, the women work out a plan to get out, intending to seize Miss Dietrich, the prison director, as a hostage.

- The movie was Pam Grier's first notable acting performance; Jack Hill says he first saw her at a general 'cattle call' for actresses and recalled that she was one of those actresses who, when they are onscreen, you are going to look at, adding that she had 'authority'.
- Hill says he disliked Spencer's script and thought the story utterly preposterous, but he 'needed the job very badly', so he agreed to direct and extensively rewrote it, adding a lot of humor.
- Hill estimated filming took around three months after the crew arrived in the Philippines in November 1970; a hurricane blew the roof off the soundstage and it was one thing after another, but he said they took whatever time they needed because time was their cheapest item.
