Plot summary
Pottsville, Idaho, is a small town in potato country, and its residents have begun to vanish. Young Michael Smith, the son of Marge Smith, is the first to go. Someone unseen cuts down a young man as he flees, and three patrons are killed at a drive-in theater. Traces of green slime turn up at each site. Mayor Gordon Lane, worried that publicity will hurt the potato business, hires Garson Jones, a chemical safety engineer, to investigate. Detective Mortimer Lutz is looking into the case as well, and he believes something terrible has come to Pottsville. Laurie, his girlfriend, waits tables in town.
