Plot summary
Kwan Fung-yiu, poor and unable to read, leaves home after his father dies and travels to the provincial capital, where he seeks refuge with Tuen Ching-wan, a friend of his father, and takes work at a dye factory called the Four Seasons Weaver. The factory belongs to Pak Siu-kwan. Across the city, Hak Wo-po, a Manchurian who owns the rival Tin Lung Spinners, holds sway and runs a gambling den whose men are sent to fight the Four Seasons workers. The new magistrate Yuen Tin-yau and his instructor Mr. Wah want to bring Hak down but lack the evidence. Yuen Tin-yau also meets Pak Siu-kwan and Mr. Wah's daughter Lin.
