Plot summary
Matthew Corbeck and his assistant Jane Turner are digging in Egypt in 1961, searching for the burial chamber of Queen Kara, while Matthew's wife Anne, pregnant and unsettled by the pair's closeness, waits at the camp. The tomb bears a warning against approaching the Nameless One. Anne's labor begins early, and she leaves Matthew afterward, taking their daughter. Eighteen years on, Matthew teaches at a British university and is married to Jane. Traces of bacteria on Kara's mummy threaten to destroy it, and he wants it brought to England. An Egyptian specialist who opposes the move is killed in an accident, allowing the mummy to be shipped. Margaret, now eighteen, comes to England to meet her father against Anne's wishes.

- Mike Newell's 105-minute cut of The Awakening was rejected by Orion for North American release, so Monte Hellman spent about two months in the summer of 1980 re-cutting it; his version, roughly five minutes shorter, went out in the US and Canada while Newell's original cut was the one released in Britain.
- The filmmakers spent about a month shooting in Egypt, at the Valley of the Kings and the City of the Dead in Cairo, and were granted permission to film inside the Egyptian Museum in Cairo, the first time a feature film had been allowed to shoot on the premises.
- Charlton Heston took the lead role in The Awakening after having earlier turned down an offer to star in The Omen (1976), joking that he accepted so as to "renew my franchise on being the only American actor allowed to play an Englishman".
- University College London's interiors doubled for those of the British Museum in The Awakening, and $250,000 of the film's budget went on recreating the British Museum.
