Plot summary
Pardoned and released from prison, Wu Sung goes looking for Pan Chin-lien, the woman he blames for his brother's death. Her side of the story is told in reverse, from the search back to the years before it. Remorseful, she looks back on a life she calls pathetic. She was traded to the rich Changs and put to work as a maid. Her master raped her. She flirted with Hsimen Ching and with other gentleman callers.
