Plot summary
In western China around 700 AD, the Tang Empire trades and exchanges culture along the Silk Road. Lieutenant Li once served in the Tang army, but he fled after defying an order to kill unarmed Göktürk prisoners, among them the elderly, women and children. He now rides with a caravan of hired escorts. The caravan carries a Buddhist monk and a relic, and raiders led by Master An, hired by the Göktürk ruler, mean to seize it. Lai Qi, a Japanese emissary, has been promised by the emperor that he may return to Japan if he finds and kills the fugitive Li. The two men meet, and agree to postpone their duel until the caravan has reached Chang'an.
