Plot summary
Stephen Elliott is an author whose childhood was troubled: his mother died when he was young, and he has spent years behaving destructively, abusing drugs and committing petty vandalism. Now in his thirties, he signs on to write a book about Hans Reiser, a software developer whose marriage was volatile and whose wife has gone missing. Hans says she is hiding to spite him, and the police have arrested him on suspicion of murder while he waits for trial; Stephen attends the proceedings, hoping the story will sell. His own memoir about that childhood is about to be published, and at its launch party his estranged father Neil stands up and calls him a liar.
