Plot summary
Geum-ja leaves prison after thirteen years, sentenced for the kidnapping and murder of a five-year-old boy, Won-mo. She confessed at nineteen and became a national sensation. A preacher and a choir wait outside with a block of tofu; she knocks it to the ground and walks away. The kindness she showed inside, comforting and helping other prisoners, was a cover meant to win favors. Now free, she collects those favors from other women released from the same prison and takes a job in a bakery, working toward the retribution she has planned.
