Plot summary
In 1940 Japan, a young playwright named Hajime Tsubaki writes comedy scripts for a theater troupe, and he must have his script checked by the government censor Mutsuo Sakisaka before rehearsals begin. The censor's task is to keep anything political or taboo out of the pre-war media, and he has a dislike of comedy as well. Hoping to close the troupe where Tsubaki works, Sakisaka declares the whole play rubbish and refuses to let it be performed until it is rewritten completely. Tsubaki brings him a new version, then another, and each visit draws more objections. The play that began as poor quality gets better with every rewrite.
