Plot summary
In Montana, bands of sheep are led up to summer pasture in the Absaroka-Beartooth mountains. A Norwegian-American family in Montana is among the last still taking its band of sheep over long distances. Recording began in the spring of 2001 and went on for eight years. The name comes from Sweet Grass County, which is one of several Montana counties where it was shot. It premiered at the Berlin International Film Festival, and in Montana it screened at the Big Sky Documentary Film Festival, where it received the Big Sky Artistic Excellence Award.
